Details about Birna Lárusdóttir and linked projects and collaborations.
In Iceland, many archaeological sites are currently under threat by sea erosion. Little has been done to estimate the size of the problem although many sites have come to light through general archaeological survey in recent years. Currently I am interested in doing excavation in a site historically well known. This is Siglunes, a commercial fishing site in the north of Iceland. It has been heavily eroded and will disappear in the next few years if nothing is done. The site is important in the context of both the history of domestic trade within the region and could also cast light on the role of fishing during the first centuries of settlement in Iceland. One eroding section shows tephra from 1104 sealing substantial midden layers.
