In my research, I am interested in combining paleoclimatic,
paleoecological, and archaeological data to examine the reciprocal
interactions that occurred between human cultures and their surrounding
environments in prehistory. My doctoral research was focused on
reconstructing terrestrial and aquatic paleoenvironments in the western
Canadian subarctic, in the immediate aftermath of the deposition of the
White River and Mazama volcanic tephras, 1147 and 7627 cal yr BP,
respectively. The results of this study provide important new
information for understanding the short and long-term consequences that
these volcanic eruptions might have had for human populations as a
result of environmental disturbance, with implications for modern questions of sustainability and adaptation to environmental change.
