Research Summary

I quantify the mutual interrelationships between climate or environmental change and social change. My spatial scale is global, but I frequently zoom in to the federal state spatial scale level. My temporal scale currently covers the Holocene, but I am developing ideas to extend this to the deep past. My approach is numerical modeling of adaptive societies embedded in the biogeographical and sociocultural context. I do this with simple models which employ few equations and few parameterizations; the simple models contain evolutionary descriptions of adaptations both of important social quantities and of population density. I have been able to successfully reproduce the radiocarbon record of European transition to agriculture with the simple model. I have shown that climate variability changes may have modulated this transition but are not causally responsible. I calculated the global carbon emissions from early agriculture.
