Since the 1970s I have focused on research and consultation on issues relating to disasters and involuntary resettlement in Peru, Honduras, India, Brazil, Jamaica, Mexico, Japan, and the United States from historical ecological and political ecological perspectives. My disaster research has focused on vulnerability analysis, post-disaster aid and reconstruction, class/race/ethnicity/gender, consensus and conflict, and community-based reconstruction efforts. My work on development forced involuntary resettlement has focused on the impacts of displacement, place attachment, resistance movements, and resettlement project analysis. I am currently working on several climate change issues such as sea level rise, environmental displacement, adaptation and mitigation strategies, and the implications of climate change for social and ecological theory.
