It is essential that we understand not only the persistence of societies, but also what it was like -- the human experience -- of living in those societies. One way of assessing this systematically is through the United Nations Development Programme's dimensions of human security. This working group will explore how those dimensions, and probably other assessment tools and concepts such as Sen's freedoms and various quality of life measures, can be used to understand the human experience in the past. This will humanize and enrich our ways of drawing from the past to contribute to decision-making about the future.
